Extensions
An extension always makes a house bigger. There are two ways to extend a building – upwards or outwards, and that means either building on another storey or adding another room or two or a veranda. Much like building from scratch, an extension requires a detailed design to be cohesive with the rest of the house and also not to disturb its construction or visual effects.
Extension outwards or upwards?
An extension should be suited to the abilities of the building and the terrain. Addition of another storey would certainly be more beneficial for saving space on the plot, but it is not possible in every case - sometimes foundations of old houses do not allow it. The need to dismantle the roof is an additional inconvenience. In that instance, the house can be extended outward by adding another part if only the plot is large enough and the ground is stable. Having said that, it is best not to undertake such task alone and higher professionals.
Outward extensions do not need any additional permission if certain requirements are met. An extension at the back of the house could not be more than 4 meters long, or 6 meters in case of a detached house. Side extensions are allowed to measure no more than half of the length of the original house and only on one storey. In conclusion, before taking any steps toward house extension, it is worth to contact a local council and make sure that planned changes are within legal limits.
